Martine Scheen wins the Statsbyggs Student Award 2019

The award is aimed to encouraging an experimental and innovative approaches in spatial and furniture design amongst future generations of interior architects. Statsbygg student award is 20 000 NOK.

The jury's report states about Martine's project the following:

Martine Scheen Jahnen's project Bevar meg vel is about the reuse and transformation of buildings with cultural value. The theme is very relevant in times when sustainability and environmental considerations are strong and must be taken care of. She elucidates this challenge thoroughly and addresses interesting questions at the intersection of conservation and ecology.

Martine has chosen the listed bank building at Bankplassen 4 as a case for the assignment. She uses both history and theory in her study and she suggests an alternative future for the building. Martine looks at the building's timeline from the time it was built and served as the National Bank, via the building's function as Contemporary Art Museum and further into the future as a living organism of biological diversity. She explores how to stage and control the transformation of the building. In this context, her main design element is PLANTEBANKEN, a living ecosystem integrated into the building.

The answer meets all the criteria that Statsbygg uses for the award.
Nevertheless, we would like to emphasize:

• the good analyzes,

• the exciting, socially relevant and well-developed case that challenges and raises our relationship with conservation decisions, conservation values, sustainability, ecology and the future.

• The highly professional material that is conveyed easily, educationally and beautifully through drawings, model photos and text.

Congratulations Martine!
